John Dewey (1859-1952, USA) was a pragmatist philosopher, psychologist, and educational reformer - often regarded as the father of the educational reform movement. “The book “Democracy and Education” is the result of an effort to identify and present the ideas associated with a democratic society, and to apply those ideas to the problems of education. The book points out the constructive aims and methods of public education viewed from the aforementioned perspective, and provides a critical assessment of theories regarding knowledge and moral development. These theories were formulated under previous social conditions but continue to be in effect in societies that claim to be democratic, thereby hindering the full realization of the democratic ideal. As [the content of] this book will gradually reveal, the philosophy presented here links the maturation of democracy to the development of the experimental method in the sciences, the evolutionary concepts in biology, and the reorganization of industry, while also indicating the changes in the content and methods of education required by those developments”. (excerpts from the Preface) We sincerely introduce this to our readers! |
