Comparison, a phrase that we implicitly understand as weighing, measuring, and counting to rank based on a certain unit whenever we hear it. So what unit do we use for comparative literature? And what is comparative literature?
Comparative literature, a field that is still quite new to many of us, only began to receive much attention in Vietnam at the beginning of the 21st century. Inheriting part of the content already available in the book "Comparative Literature: Research and Translation" in 2003, while supplementing with new translations and research, lecturers and scientists who have been or are currently studying and working at the Faculty of Literature, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City have produced the book "Encounters of World Literature: Comparative Literature: Research and Translation". The book with 3 chapters includes 2 main contents:
"Content 1: Introducing articles and translations on general issues of comparative literature, from basic concepts that have been mentioned for a long time such as comparative literature, world literature, general literature, ethnic and nationalist issues, to contemporary issues such as transnationalism, translation studies, and literary reception as research directions of interest to contemporary comparative literature scholars.
Content 2: Introducing specific studies of world literary phenomena in terms of exchange, influence, and parallel, typological relationships. Articles on classical and modern Vietnamese literature in comparison with regional and world literature." (Excerpt from the Preface)
As the work of a research collective, Encounters of World Literature: Comparative Literature: Research and Translation provides information and diverse approaches to classical and modern literary phenomena in Vietnam and the world. Hopefully, this will be a useful tool for literary researchers, especially undergraduate and graduate students, and also an informative book for those interested in literature in general and comparative literature in particular.
