In 1863, three high-ranking officials of the Nguyen Dynasty including Phan Thanh Gian (Chief Envoy), Pham Phu Thu (Deputy Envoy), and Nguy Khac Dan (Assistant Envoy) led the Dai Nam diplomatic mission to fulfill diplomatic responsibilities with France and Spain. Nguy Khac Dan was the Assistant Envoy, ranking third among the three leaders of the mission. He recorded quite fully and accurately his observations of France during the diplomatic trip, from history, geography, and religion to the administrative apparatus, military organization, daily life, etc., of France at that time. He left behind a research work on 19th-century France – the travelogue Nhu Tay Ky. “Nhu Tay Ky” was translated from the handwritten manuscript of Nhu Tay Ky kept at the Institute of Han-Nom Studies, which remains the only existing copy to date. The work contains rich content and serves as valuable material for research on Vietnamese history in the mid-19th century, the diplomatic relations between Vietnam and France, and France in the 19th century from the objective perspective of a visitor from afar.
