As Shin Kyung-Sook's seventh novel, "I'll Be Right There" selects a theme similar to Haruki Murakami's "Norwegian Wood," only with its setting taking place in South Korea in the 1980s. And once again, one encounters sadness and confusion intertwined with faith, love, desire, and the innocence of youth. All are expressed completely and brilliantly through the introspective narrative voice of the "I" character in the story. The story begins gently, like a small pebble thrown into a calm lake, a phone call from somewhere calling for the "I" character. The call originates from him, someone not seen for eight years, to let her know that the teacher they were once close to during their student days is now about to pass away. The phone call brings back to the "I" character what had sunk deep under the surface of the lake. Then, each memory floods back authentically. And so, the reader is immersed in the profound memories of the "I" character... "At that time, in that place, if I hadn't met them, how would I have gotten through those days?" Shin Kyung-Sook has previously captivated readers with her soul-wrenching prose, most typically in the book "Please Look After Mom." However, in this novel, her ability to write and construct a story has transcended the style of "personal narrative," developing into a complete, independent world, becoming a story unto itself, rather than just the author's story.
