Launch of the Mental Health Handbook Series for Students and School Counselors

In an increasingly challenging academic environment characterized by social relations and peer pressure, mental health has become a pivotal factor in the holistic development of students. To raise awareness and strengthen school-based psychological support resources, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU-HCM (USSH) has recently introduced a Mental Health Handbook series, comprising two essential guides for learners and school counseling staff.

The series includes:

  • Mental Health Self-Care Skills Handbook for Students
  • Mental Health Care Handbook for School Counselors and Support Staff

These two publications were developed under the project "Developing, Piloting, and Scaling School Counseling Models," part of Decision No. 703/QD-ĐHQG dated June 12, 2023, by the President of VNU-HCM. This initiative implements the program "Strengthening Revolutionary Ideal, Ethical, and Lifestyle Education while Awakening Aspirations for Youth and Children (2021–2030)" within the VNU-HCM system. The project is a collaboration between VNU-HCM and USSH, with the Mental Health Research and Support Program (MHRSP) leading the content development.

Practical Tools for Students

The student edition of the handbook is compiled with the goal of helping students develop a correct understanding of mental health, recognize signs of instability, and proactively respond to daily life challenges. Presented in an accessible and visual format, the handbook focuses on several key areas:

  • Explaining mental health concepts in a relatable and practical manner.
  • Identifying emotional, behavioral, and cognitive indicators when one’s mental state is out of balance.
  • A "Quick Mental State Check" table to help students evaluate their levels of stress, anxiety, or depression.
  • Providing practical suggestions such as time management, proper rest, emotional journaling, physical exercise, and mindful social media usage.
  • Guidance on when to seek professional help and a comprehensive directory of psychological support units within the VNU-HCM system.

This handbook acts as a "companion," empowering students to enhance their academic performance, lead healthier lives, and feel confident in seeking support when needed.

Professional Standardization Manual for School-Based Psychological Support Staff

In parallel, the handbook for faculty and staff engaged in school counseling provides a systematic framework of knowledge and skills, strictly aligned with the requirements of Circular No. 18/2025/TT-BGDDT.

The document presents several critical components:

  • Core concepts of mental health and specific risk factors affecting students.
  • Core Skillset: active listening, questioning, feedback, and problem-level assessment.
  • Professional ethics and boundaries based on APA (American Psychological Association) standards to ensure professional integrity and student safety.
  • Basic counseling processes, crisis identification, and specific criteria for referral to clinical specialists.
  • Instructions for establishing and managing School Mental Health Support Offices, including staffing, operational mechanisms, professional supervision, and annual planning.

This handbook serves as a practical reference to enhance school counseling capacity, helping educational institutions build safe, friendly environments and provide timely support to learners.

The launch of these two handbooks marks a significant step in VNU-HCM’s strategy to strengthen mental health support, aiming to foster a school community rooted in listening, respect, empathy, and mutual companionship amidst modern challenges. The materials are being widely distributed to students and counseling staff, with units encouraged to utilize them in communication activities, training workshops, and psychological support programs.
