WORKSHOPS AND MOU SIGNING CEREMONY BETWEEN THE EF AND THE SCHOOL OF CRITICAL STUDIES - UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW (UK)

To enhance research and teaching quality in the field of applied linguistics, the Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature, in collaboration with the School of Critical Studies - University of Glasgow (UK), has organized a series of international workshops on the 26th and 27th of October 2023.

In the first workshop on the 26th of October at EF's English Resource Center (ERC), speakers from the University of Glasgow -  Prof. Tom Bartlett, Dr. Angela Gayton and Dr. Piotr Wegorowski gave presentations on the methodology and results of some recent studies of lecturers from the University of Glasgow. This workshop was an opportunity for EF lecturers to learn from the experiences of lecturers from a foreign university, in so doing improving their own research proficiencies..

In the 2nd workshop in the afternoon of the same day, all three speakers introduced the students and lecturers of EF to graduate programs in linguistics and applied linguistics at the University of Glasgow. Through this workshop, the Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature realized an opportunity for further collaborations with the University of Glasgow in hosting joint programmes at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

In the third workshop on the 27th of October, Dr. Tom Bartlett gave a presentation on “Introduction to Systemic Functional Linguistics & Discourse Analysis” and pointed out the differences between text analysis and discourse analysis. The next presentation was from Dr. Piotr Wegorowski and Dr. Angela Gayton on the topic of “Language & Globalization”, or the current state of English language learning and teaching at different countries. All three speakers greatly stressed the importance of new research trends in the field of applied linguistics, thereby pointing out the excellent compatibility between the two institutions and the potential for future collaborative research.

The culmination of the events was the MOU signing ceremony between the two faculties and universities, witnessed by representatives from the Board of Presidents of USSH, the Office of External Relations and Research Affairs and the EF Board of Deans. The signing ceremony marked a major milestone for future collaborative efforts between the two institutions in many aspects.

The event brought valuable knowledge and experience for the lecturers and students of the EF and paved the way for opportunities for development for both the EF and USSH. The EF would like to send its heartfelt thanks to speakers from the University of Glasgow and that we are looking forward to working together in the future.
