Ensuring the quality of training activities at Vietnamese universities in the context of university autonomy

On the morning of July 26, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City (USSH, VNUHCM) in coordination with the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Viet Nam National University, Hanoi (USSH, VNU) organized a National Scientific Conference on the topic "Ensuring the quality of training activities at Vietnamese universities in the context of university autonomy" with the participation of nearly 40 universities across the country.

Delivering the opening remarks, Dr. Le Hoang Dung - Vice President - stated that the two universities have signed agreements as well as organized many joint conferences in the spirit of "One USSH". This conference is also a testament to the continuation of the success of previous conferences. Besides, he expressed his deep gratitude to the USSH, VNU for agreeing to co-organize such a valuable conference.

Discussing the theme of the conference, he said: "This conference raises a new issue regarding quality assurance. The important goal is how training quality can meet the incessant development of society while integrating internationally, keeping learners to stay and develop the country, and even attracting learners from abroad to Viet Nam."

The conference was divided into three sessions - a plenary session and three parallel sessions - with the themes: "Ensuring quality of training programs"; "Teaching, testing, and assessing learning outcomes"; "University autonomy, quality culture" with 4 presentations in each session.

Summarizing the conference, Dr. Hoang Mai Khanh - Head of the Quality Assurance Office, Deputy Head of the Organizing Committee of the conference - shared that the conference received more than 61 articles from nearly 40 educational institutions across the country on topics revolving around: Quality benchmarking; university quality culture, training programs, teaching and learning, testing and assessment. "One conference cannot solve all problems, especially regarding quality, it requires more time. Therefore, this conference can be seen as a stepping stone to share more issues in the future" - she expressed.

Delivering the closing remarks, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong - Vice President of USSH, VNU - affirmed the close and intimate relationship between university autonomy and quality assurance. "University autonomy is an advanced method of university governance, an inevitable trend of development, and a necessary and sufficient condition for universities to exist and develop in the trend of competition and integration. This is also a core solution to increase the conditions for quality assurance, and quality assurance is the foundation for educational institutions to better fulfill their accountability" - she shared.

The conference created a scientific and practical theoretical basis for ensuring quality, improving and innovating training activities at Vietnamese universities in the context of university autonomy, contributing to completing the mission and goals set by the University. Besides, the conference also oriented the development of the two schools in the near future, creating opportunities for lecturers, doctoral candidates, graduate students, and students to understand more about the importance of ensuring the quality of training activities in the context of university autonomy.
