The Faculty of Linguistics organized the 3rd National Scientific Conference "Theoretical and Applied Linguistic Issues"
On November 29, 2024, the Faculty of Linguistics, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City National University organized the 3rd National Scientific Conference "Theoretical and Applied Linguistic Issues".
The conference was honored to welcome delegates and invited guests who are researchers and scientists in the South: Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Hai (Dong Nai University of Technology), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dang Ngoc Le - President of the Ho Chi Minh City Linguistics Association (Nguyen Tat Thanh University), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Cong Duc (former lecturer of the Faculty of Linguistics), Dr. Do Thi Bich Lai (former lecturer of the Faculty of Linguistics), Dr. Huynh Ba Lan (former lecturer of the Faculty of Linguistics), Dr. Huynh Thi Hong Hanh (former lecturer of the Faculty of Linguistics), Dr. Bui Thi Kim Loan (Binh Duong University), Dr. Nguyen Dinh Viet (Ho Chi Minh City University of Education), Dr. Tran Thi Thanh Truc (Ho Chi Minh City University of Law), Dr. Ho Van Hai (Saigon University), Dr. Ho Van Han (Nguyen Tat Thanh University), Dr. Huynh Thanh Long (Nguyen Tat Thanh University), Dr. Huynh Le Chi Hai (Khanh Hoa University), Dr. Nguyen Duy Trung (Ho Chi Minh City Police Newspaper), etc.
On the side of the University, the Conference was honored to welcome Ms. Mai Thi Kim Khanh - Deputy Head of the Department of External Relations and Scientific Management. This year's Conference attracted nearly 100 guests who are lecturers inside and outside the University; PhD students, PhD candidates, master's students and students of the Faculty's courses.
At the plenary session, Dr. Nguyen Hoang Trung - Member of the Organizing Committee of the Conference, Head of the Faculty of Linguistics, acknowledged the participation, comments and submissions of the authors/author groups for this Conference. Maintaining the theme of the Conference for the third time also affirms the research orientation of the Faculty within the general orientation of the School, which is the combination of theoretical research and applied research: basic science is the root and practical application is the research mindset of scientists in the present era.

Also in the plenary session, Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Ngoc Le hoped that the reports presented and the discussions in the Workshop would help participants gain more useful knowledge to serve their future research, especially for those who are graduate students and researchers.
In this session, chaired by Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Ngoc Le, Dr. Nguyen Hoang Trung, and secretary, MSc. Nguyen Thuy Nuong, the Workshop listened to 3 presentations: the presentation "Ecolinguistics: concepts, fields and research application directions in Vietnam" by Dr. Dinh Lu Giang; the presentation "Multimodal approach from the basis of Social Semiotics" by the group of authors Dr. Pham Hong Hai, Dr. Huynh Thi Hong Hanh, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Cong Duc, presented by Dr. Pham Hong Hai; "Formal approach and semantic approach in linguistics" by Dr. Nguyen Hoang Trung. All three presentations attracted the attention of the participants, especially the issue of “Ecolinguistics” - an interdisciplinary field, focusing on the relationship between language, culture and environment in the first presentation.

After the plenary session, the Workshop was divided into two subcommittees to continue working: “Theoretical Linguistics” Subcommittee (Chair: Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Cong Duc, Dr. Pham Hong Hai, Secretary: MSc. Nguyen Thuy Nuong) and “Applied Linguistics” Subcommittee (Chair: Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Phuong Trang, Dr. Dinh Lu Giang, Secretary: MSc. Tran Thi Thuy An). Each subcommittee has two parallel working sessions.
The “Theoretical Linguistics” Subcommittee has 07 presentations: (1) “Some source domains in Vietnamese from the perspective of the great chain metaphor theory” by Dr. Nguyen Dinh Viet; (2) “The relationship between initial sounds and main sounds of Chau Ro dialect from the perspective of pitch” by the group of authors Dr. Nguyen Tran Quy, Dr. Dinh Lu Giang; (3) “VOT characteristics of initial consonants in people with dysarthria - A case study” by the group of authors Nguyen Thi Hoa, Dr. Nguyen Tran Quy; (4) “Re-evaluating Chomsky’s generative grammar in the age of artificial intelligence” by the group of authors Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Vu, MSc. Nguyen Thi Hong Lien); (5) “Cultural linguistics: some additional interpretations and application suggestions” by PhD student Pham Ngoc Truong Linh; (6) “Linguistic attitudes of Cham people in An Giang - a participant observation study” by PhD student Ton Thi Tuyet Oanh; (7) “Word class distinction in Vietnamese: A flexible approach” by PhD student Le Thi Truc Ha.
The “Applied Linguistics” subcommittee has 08 presentations: (1) “Speech acts expressing interpersonal functions in the title and discourse of Vietnamese press releases” by PhD student Huynh Cam Thuy; (2) “Metaphorical translation of morality in the novel The Extraordinary Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: Comparative analysis of Vietnamese translations of the work” by a group of authors including PhD student Pham Thai Bao Ngoc and PhD student Nguyen Hoang Trung; (3) “Application of context in teaching” by PhD student Phan Thi Ha; (4) “The wind element in Nguyen Ngoc Tu’s short story” by PhD student Tu Thi My Hanh; (5) “Analysis of psychosocial film posters shown in theaters in Vietnam from the perspective of systemic functional grammar and image grammar” by PhD student Tran Thi Van; (6) “The concept of “death” in Chinese and Vietnamese from the perspective of cognitive linguistics” by author Tran Thi Diep Truc; “Application of semiotics in the analysis of advertising discourse” by a group of authors who are talented Bachelor students of the 2021-2025 course including Tran Huu An Khuong, Ngo Thi Thuy Trang, Tran Thi Ha Uyen and Nguyen Thi Kim Phung.
The discussions at the two subcommittees in the morning and afternoon sessions were very lively and raised a number of interesting and practical issues. The number of opinions exchanged by the audience on the analysis of advertising discourse with the application of systemic functional grammar theory and image grammar was perhaps the most numerous and diverse.
At 4:00 p.m. on the same day, the Workshop came to its closing session. The Workshop ended with a proposal and promise by Dr. Nguyen Hoang Trung about creating an "academic space of Linguistics". Dr. Hoang Trung emphasized the desire to organize regular professional activities for learners and those interested in Linguistics. The purpose is to spread the spirit of learning and researching language and at the same time further enhance the spirit of self-study to enrich linguistic knowledge in order to exchange and share with each other in a scientific and open academic space.
The success of this year’s conference is a motivation for the faculty and specialists of the Faculty of Linguistics to organize research activities. In the future, the Faculty hopes to continue to receive attention and submissions from scientists, PhD students, PhD candidates, graduate students and students of all courses.
