Seminar “Copyright and related rights in the digital environment: Protecting and exploiting intellectual assets for training, scientific research, and cultural industries”
On the afternoon of April 20, at the Saigon campus, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City (USSH, VNU-HCM) held a specialized seminar on intellectual property in 2026: “Copyright and related rights in the digital environment: Protecting and exploiting intellectual assets for training, scientific research, and cultural industries,” organized by the Center for Information, Library and Museum in coordination with the Department of Personnel and Legal Affairs, the Trade Union, and the Youth Union.
Opening the seminar, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Luu Van Quyet, Vice President of the University, stated that training and scientific research activities are increasingly tied to the digital environment and the spirit of implementing Resolution 57 on the development of science, technology, and innovation. He emphasized that the issue of intellectual property is no longer a one-dimensional matter but has become a crucial requirement in university management strategy. He shared: “As a multi-disciplinary and multi-field training institution, the University has always considered copyright and related rights in the digital environment as one of the most important issues. In which, the Center for Information, Library and Museum has always been a leading unit, with many activities that shape copyright and related rights.”

The seminar focused on clarifying core issues regarding copyright and related rights in the digital environment, from legal concepts to practical situations such as citations, using digital resources, and applying AI in content creation. Opinions emphasized new challenges in establishing and protecting copyrights, affirming the importance of raising awareness about academic integrity, aiming for effective exploitation of intellectual assets serving training, research, and the development of cultural industries.
Following the program, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tu Diep Cong Thanh, Director of the Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Center, VNU-HCM (IPTC) presented in detail core concepts such as Copyright - related rights, Industrial Property rights, Plant variety rights, etc. Discussing specific situations in life, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tu Diep Cong Thanh argued that fair citation of works without distorting the author's meaning for article writing is a legally permitted act. Additionally, the speaker suggested that although AI can support the creation of text, images, or audio, the use of these products still requires consideration of input data sources as well as ownership of the output products. This poses many new challenges for identifying and protecting copyright in the digital age.

Regarding the University’s intellectual property documents, Dr. Bui Thu Hang, Director of the Center for Information, Library and Museum, summarized and emphasized new issues in legal documents compared to previous ones. She affirmed: “The focus of disseminating legal documents is not only on regulations but also on synchronous implementation, ensuring transparency and responsibility for academic integrity.”
