PROFESSOR STEPHEN MOORE AND THE SOCIOLINGUISTIC DRIVE AT EF

In July 2025, EF welcomed the arrival of Professor Stephen Moore - a renowned expert in the fields of Discourse Analysis and ESP (English for Specific Purposes) and long-time friend of the faculty. His collaboration with us as Adjunct Professor marks an important milestone in EF's development as a faculty with its own identity and unique strengths.

Linguistics, especially Sociolinguistics, has long been a part of EF's identity and one of its core strengths. All of EF's specializations are closely connected to this vast discipline: for students of linguistics and language teaching, sociolinguistics is crucial in understanding learners and how to effectively work with them as well as to apply what they learned in other parts of linguistics in practice; for students of translation and interpreting, sociolinguistics is one of the research areas that can provide insight to understand how translation and interpreting is performed, along with research on language comprehension and production, discourse processing, memory, attention, expertise, and performance, crucial for a complex, human-centered approach to translation. Lastly, for students of British and American culture and literature, understanding of sociolinguistics helps them return to their roots by cultivating a greater sense of appreciation for literature and the people and societies that inspired it.

The students of EF MA in TESOL were able to work with him directly during the course Sociolinguistics, during which they were able to learn more about dialects, sociolects, multilingualism, and other aspects of sociolinguistics. We hope that this short learning journey has inspired our future teachers and that it is just the first of many fruitful collaborations to come.
