TTA SCREENING FOR DYSCALCULIA IN VIETNAMESE STUDENTS IN GRADES 1-6

Abstract:

Dyscalculia can be identified by difficulties with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. In addition to specialized diagnostic tools, numeracy screening is considered an inexpensive and quick form of outcome assessment. Screening identifies students who are performing at a lower level than their peers. In the cognitive domain in general, a score of 2 standard deviations (SD) is considered deficient. This article presents the results of a study adapting the TempoTest Automatiseren (TTA) numeracy screening test (De Vos, 2010) on 1342 Vietnamese students. The test asks students in grades 1-6 to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with 50 different items as quickly and accurately as possible within two minutes for each operation (except multiplication and division for students in grade 1). The study provides data on Vietnamese school children, which has implications for clinical practice in screening children with dyscalculia.
