Abstract

The increasing application of technology in tourism, including virtual reality technology, has led to the necessity of investigating the intention to use such technology, with tourists being the direct users of these technologies. Although virtual tourism has been around for a while, it has recently gained more traction in the context of the digital transformation of the tourism industry and some special social contexts such as war, pandemics, and changes in tourism behavior etc. However, this new form of tourism still has limitations that may affect tourists’ intention to use it. This study aims to examine the moderating role of the perception of limitations on the acceptance of virtual tourism and the intention to use it, using the PLS-SEM model (Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling) with a convenience sample of 187 domestic tourists in Ho Chi Minh City. The research findings indicate that the awareness of limitations of virtual tourism has a positive impact on the intention to use, but lacks sufficient statistical significance to conclude a moderating role in the relationship between awareness of usefulness and awareness of ease of use on the intention to use. Based on these findings, the article proposes some recommendations to enhance tourists’ intention to use virtual tourism by highlighting the constraints of virtual reality tourism in addition to its prominent advantages.
