On the afternoon of August 14, the Center for International Education (CIE), the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (USSH, VNUHCM) held an Orientation session for new students of the joint program Master in Linguistics with TESOL concentration Cohort 9, offered by USSH, VNUHCM and Benedictine University (BENU), United States.

At the Orientation session, there was the presence of Dr. Scott Stillar - Senior lecturer of BENU, Dr. Nguyen Thi Hong Tham - Former Associate Dean, Senior lecturer of the Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature (EF), USSH, VNUHCM, Dr. Tran Thanh Huong - Standing Deputy Director of CIE, Mr. Tran Nam - Deputy Director of CIE and new students of Cohort 9.

To start the Orientation session, Dr. Tran Thanh Huong delivered an Opening speech. Later, Dr. Scott Stillar represented BENU to congratulate new students admitted to the Joint program Master in Linguistics with TESOL concentration Cohort 9.
To have an overview of CIE, Mr. Tran Nam had a short introduction about CIE regarding Joint programs for Bachelor’s degrees and Master’s degrees, partner universities for exchange, staff, recent activities of CIE, and contact information when students need support.

Continuing the Orientation session, Dr. Nguyen Thi Hong Tham also introduced students have an overview of EF which was in charge of the professional part of the program in Viet Nam with information such as the history and teaching experience of the faculty, staff, training and research programs.

The highlight of the Orientation session was the presentation of Dr. Scott Stillar. He summarized important information that students would need to pay attention to throughout the learning process. He also listed the courses taught by EF’s lecturers and the courses taught by BENU’s lecturers. Besides, Dr. Scott Stillar instructed new students on how to log in and work on D2L, the online learning system of BENU. During the instruction process, he always observed students to check if they had any problems with the system. When students encountered technical issues, he was always willing to assist them immediately.

The last part of the Orientation session was the Q&A part where Dr. Scott Stillar and Dr. Tran Thanh Huong were enthusiastic about answering all the questions and worries of students.

The Orientation Session of the Joint program Master in Linguistics with TESOL concentration Cohort 9 was held successfully. The Center for International Education hopes that this Orientation session can give new students a better understanding of the program so that they can build a good study plan to achieve satisfying results.
