USSH, VNU-HCM successfully held the 12th Vietnam National Conference on Geography Science
On Dec 18, 2021, the 12th Vietnam National Conference on Geography Science with the topic “Vietnam Geography Science in developing green economy and maintaining territorial security” was held by the Faculty of Geography, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City (USSH, VNU-HCM). The conference took place at USSH’s Đinh Tiên Hoàng Campus and streamed online via Zoom.
Joining the conference were Prof. Dr. Nguyễn Cao Huần – President of the National Geographic Society, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Đặng Văn Phan – Vice President of the National Geographic Society and President of HCMC Geographic Society, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyễn Minh Tâm – Vice President of VNU-HCM, Dr. Phan Thanh Định – Vice-Rector of USSH, VNU-HCM, and 200 attendees from institutions, universities and research centers across the country.
In his opening remarks, Prof. Dr. Nguyễn Cao Huần paid tribute to the researchers for having highlighted the significance of Vietnam’s Geography in the country’s development. He also announced that the committee had received approximately 300 research papers with interesting topics regarding geography, social and economic geography. “The committee believes that with the participation of universities and research centers here, the conference will be a success. This conference will provide experience for future education and training while improving the position of geographic research in our country’s development,” he further commented.

Regarding the significance of this conference, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyễn Minh Tâm stated that this annual event is a good opportunity for researchers, lecturers, and students to learn more about issues that Geography studies are facing, understand and apply research findings more effectively. On behalf of the organizers, Dr. Phan Thanh Định presented the conference’s achievements, difficulties they came across in the progress, and expressed his hopes for a successful conference.

The conference approved 10 research proposals, which focus on topics like human roles and responsibilities in protecting the environment, solutions to reduce the impact of natural disasters, or applications of ArcGIS and GIS.
At the end of the conference, Dr. Phan Thanh Định expressed his gratitude to the participants before performing the flag awarding ceremony to the Central Institute for Natural Resources and Environmental Studies (VNU-CRES) – the host of this year’s Vietnam National Conference on Geography Science.

This event was hosted to evaluate research and training results in the field of geography science and its applications in the country’s development while creating a playground for academics and students interested in this topic to help enhance future research quality.
