Afternoon, Feb.16, 2022, the University of Social Science and Humanities held the first session of the Research Ethics Committee (REC). The session adopted the operational regulation and finished personnel work for incoming activities.
The event was attended by Assoc.Prof. Dr. Ngô Thị Phương Lan, Rector of USSH, Dr. Lê Hoàng Dũng, Vice-Rector and other REC members.

In her opening remarks, Assoc.Prof.-Dr.Lan asserted the importance of ethics in scientific research, “As a top tier social science and humanities university in the South, we reiterate that ethics in scientific research is of great significance.” She also announced a list of 17 members and their individual research directions. “On behalf of the Board of Directors, I expect that REC’s activities will contribute significantly to the development of the social sciences and humanities field and ensure research integrity”, said Assoc.Prof.-Dr.Lan.

Representing REC members, Dr. Trần Anh Tiến- Head of Office of External Relation and Science, adopted the operational regulation on research principles, organizational structure, responsibilities, and ethics review process. The regulation stated that REC is to hold a joint session once annually and to work under 4 principles:
- To respect every individual
- To be kind
- To be impartial
- To ensure scientific honesty, accuracy, and integrity
In the session, the delegates also elected president and vice-president by secret ballot. With 15 /15 votes, Prof.Dr. Lương Văn Hy - President of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) was elected the President of REC, while Assoc.Prof.-Dr. Nguyễn Hồng Sinh - Head of Faculty of Library & Information Science became Vice-president of the committee. The REC’s president later appointed Dr. Lê Thị Mai Liên - lecturer of the Faculty of Psychology as the Secretary of REC.

About his feelings when he took the role, “Over these years, USSH has taken groundbreaking steps, which help strengthen the bonds between researchers.”, he shared. Besides, the new President expressed his hope that REC will work effectively in upcoming years to ensure the research integrity of research proposals.

The Research Ethics Committee of USSH was established on Dec. 30, 2021, whose mission is to review proposed and in-progress research involving human subjects. REC also performs other roles: consulting, monitoring ethical issues in research, and protecting the legitimate rights of human subjects.
