
On November 26th, 2022, students majoring in Communication in collaboration with Deakin University, Australia, had an observational field trip - part of the Introduction to Sociology course.
According to Mr. Tran Nam, in the Introduction to Sociology course, students will be instructed by lecturers as well as discuss in groups and conduct self-study on topics such as Core concepts of Sociology: Society, Social Institutions, Culture, Socialization, Deviant Behavior, Social Changes...; Theories: Structure – Function, Social Conflict, Symbolic Interaction; Methods of applying Theory in explaining Social Issues or issues related to the Communication course that students are studying.
According to the course syllabus, on November 26th, 2022, students were instructed by the lecturer to observe the central area of District 1, and write an analysis report on issues including (1) Urban advertising, (2) Sidewalk economy, and (3) Public space. By December 27th, 2022, the observation groups reported in English the results of the observations, summarized the conclusions from the observations and compared them with the theories in Sociology. Through group discussions and presentations, students gradually better understand the main theories and concepts in Introduction to Sociology.
Learning through practice and social environments is one of the key solutions to improve the quality of teaching at the Center for International Education. Students from other courses also learn about the culture of the Chinese community in Ho Chi Minh City, the operation of a media group, journalism office, or diplomatic and cultural organizations, etc.
