IReview 11/12/23 | CONFLICT IN GAZA: WHY DOES THE US STILL UNILATERALLY DEFEND ISRAEL?

Israel's military campaign in Gaza shows no signs of cooling down. So far, nearly 17,500 Palestinians have died and more than 46,400 others have been injured. Meanwhile, at the United Nations Security Council, the US vetoed a resolution calling for an "immediate humanitarian ceasefire" in Gaza on December 8. To better understand the motivations behind the US's continued defense of Israel in the Hamas-Israel conflict, IRYS introduces to readers an article on Tuoi Tre newspaper by Dr. Huynh Tam Sang - lecturer at the Faculty of International Relations, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City.

In the article, the author points out that the cause stems from the US's realpolitik, with the goal of preventing any country from rising to a position of hegemony in the Middle East to ensure the interests that the US has there. Furthermore, accepting a ceasefire solution could reduce Washington's standing and weaken the cohesion in its relationship with Jerusalem. However, will the unilateral "weaponization" of the veto at the Security Council pose a challenge to US strategic calculations in the long term?
