On December 12, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Washington D.C. (USA) to call for military and economic aid for Ukraine in its war with Russia. In an article in Tuoi Tre newspaper, Dr. Huynh Tam Sang, a lecturer at the Faculty of International Relations, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City, assessed that the visit was an effort to lobby for financial support from allies in the context that the war balance is tilting towards Russia, the US Congress is divided over the issue of aid for Ukraine, and the morale of European allies is also on the decline.
According to the author, the difference in this visit is that President Zelensky emphasized that the current situation is not only a threat to Ukraine but also to the national interests of the United States. Therefore, he attempted to “frame” it that Washington's delay in providing aid to Kyiv would contribute to the ultimate victory for Moscow. However, the author also believes that the possibility of the US Congress passing the aid package for Ukraine is very low due to internal political disputes. Failure could potentially damage the political reputation and diplomatic capacity of President Zelensky and further deepen internal divisions within Ukraine.
