On January 13, 2024, at room B204, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU-HCM (Dinh Tien Hoang campus, District 1), the thesis defense session of 08 Urban Studies students of the 2020-2024 course (FUS13) took place.
The graduation thesis is an elective major subject with 8 credits, equivalent to 4 elective major subjects in the Urban Studies bachelor's program in year 4. The subject aims to create conditions for students to apply the system of basic knowledge of the industry and major in the process of implementing the graduation thesis topic, creating conditions for students to perfect their professional skills, develop independent research skills and use foreign languages, and proactively improve their professional and social attitudes. The thesis defense session received the attention and participation of lecturers and students of the Urban Studies faculty of all courses.
Overview of the thesis defense
The thesis evaluation council consists of: Dr. Le Thanh Hoa - Chairman of the Council; Dr. Truong Hoang Truong - Council member; Dr. Son Thanh Tung - Council member; Dr. Vo Thanh Tuyen - Council secretary. The reviewer and instructor evaluate each student participating in the thesis on their knowledge, skills, and attitudes during the thesis process as well as the final scientific product, which is the research topic report.
Students present research results
The topics of students participating in the graduation thesis course 2020 - 2024 were highly appreciated by the Council and the faculty for their practicality and applicability in the field of urban management, planning and development. The products of the research topics demonstrate the students' research capacity and level (ability to apply a system of knowledge to analyze and evaluate problems; presentation and persuasion skills; use of foreign documents for analysis and evaluation, ...). Through that, students also demonstrate their capacity to build, implement and manage to carry out a research topic; the spirit of discovery, development of research ideas; the spirit of self-study and responsibility when carrying out the research topic. The research topics of 8 students who completed their thesis include:
- Tran Khai Minh with the topic "Proposal for organizing landscape combined with food street on Nguyen Khoi and Ton That Thuyet streets (section from Kenh Te bridge to alley 324), District 4, Ho Chi Minh City".
- Le Huy Hoang with the topic "Evaluating the impact of trees on the temperature in the inner city area of Ho Chi Minh City".
- Dau Ngoc Yen Nhi with the topic "Local solutions in managing household waste in Thu Duc City".
- Huynh Thi Minh Thai with the topic "Trends of economic space distribution of industry clusters in Ho Chi Minh City, period 2011 - 2019".
- Tran Kieu Tram with the topic "Lessons learned for VNU from the practical application of solar energy by some universities in Ho Chi Minh City". HCM”
- Nguyen Trieu Vy with the topic “Factors affecting the intention to use electric transportation of students of VNU-HCM, from the perspective of green consumption behavior”.
- Nguyen Pham Quynh Giang with the topic “Evaluating the possibility of preserving old villas in Ho Chi Minh City by the mechanism of transferring development rights (TDRs) from the perspective of the community”.
- Nguyen Thi Hieu Thao with the topic “Evaluating the ability to attract young workers in small and medium-sized cities”.
During the research defense session, the students demonstrated their persuasive presentation skills; creative and clear presentation format and layout; good use of presentation software; confident answering questions or receptive attitude when receiving comments from the Council.

The Council announced the scores of the graduation thesis topics from good to excellent with high consensus from the reviewers and the instructors. The Council Chairman concluded that after the students revised the thesis content according to the comments of the teachers, the thesis will be bound and stored in the Library of the Faculty of Urban Studies. This will be a useful document for students of the Faculty of Urban Studies as well as interested individuals and organizations to refer to.
