Exploring Practical Applications in Applied Urban Anthropology: Student Visit to Ajinomoto Bien Hoa Factory

Urban Anthropology is an important field of study, helping to gain a deeper understanding of the culture, behavior and needs of urban residents in the context of globalization and international integration. The application of urban anthropology will contribute to orienting policies, planning solutions and urban design suitable for people, towards sustainable development.
Within the framework of the Applied Urban Anthropology subject, with the support of Urban Studies Alumni - Duong Vo Thao Ngan (FUS04 Alumni) who is working at the Community Relations Department of Ajinomoto Vietnam Company, in coordination with the Faculty of Urban Studies, a field trip was organized at Ajinomoto Bien Hoa Factory. The tour took place on September 24, 2024 at Bien Hoa 1 Industrial Park, An Binh Ward, Bien Hoa City, Dong Nai Province.

Educational objectives and itinerary
This tour is designed to align with the course objectives, providing students with a practical approach to aspects of urban anthropology, focusing on how global corporations such as Ajinomoto adapt to and influence local urban cultures and environments. The itinerary includes a comprehensive tour of the plant’s main facilities, including the AJI-NO-MOTO® MSG Museum, the Mayonnaise Production Line and the wastewater treatment area, providing students with an in-depth look at the operations of a major food company.
The program begins at 13:00 with a welcome and introduction to the Ajinomoto Group and its operations in Vietnam. Students also learned about the company’s work culture, philosophy of community spirit, social and economic value creation, and innovative, pioneering, socially responsible and humane business practices. This was followed by a guided factory tour, demonstrations of the food production process, and a Q&A session where students could ask questions to Ajinomoto employees.

The tour is an opportunity for students to recognize a part of the working culture at a global corporation, the philosophy of operating for humanity in addition to bringing economic value in business through product quality, production activities, community activities, working environment, etc., not only helping students expand their practical knowledge related to the subject, but also helping them understand more necessary skills in the current globalized working environment.
At the end of the tour, the Faculty of Urban Studies would like to thank the Board of Directors of Ajinomoto Company for creating conditions for students to visit and learn. Especially thank the Community Relations Department, Ajinomoto Company for organizing a thoughtful, professional and useful tour. Urban Studies students also received gifts from Ajinomoto Company.
