Cultural diplomacy has truly become one of the pillar factors alongside political and economic diplomacy in modern diplomacy.
On September 10, 2023, Vietnam and the US officially upgraded their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership for peace, cooperation, and sustainable development. Therefore, Vietnam needs to deeply perceive and accurately assess the new developments in the foreign policy of the US in general and its cultural diplomacy in particular to put forward timely and appropriate foreign policy guidelines. At the same time, the experience from the cultural diplomacy activities of a superpower like the US also has reference value, suggesting to Vietnam ways of behaving towards other countries in the world and in the region.
To provide a new perspective and systematic documentation on how the US uses and deploys cultural tools to achieve the goal of enhancing the image of the US, especially in the context of current competition for influence and interests between powers in the region in the post-Cold War era, the National Political Publishing House of Truth publishes the book US Cultural Diplomacy in the First Two Decades of the 21st Century by Dr. Nguyen Van Duan - University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City.
The book clarifies the content of US cultural diplomacy through the process of implementing policies and cultural diplomacy activities in the first two decades of the 21st century, specifically through three presidents: George Walker Bush (2001 - 2009), Barack Obama (2009 - 2017), and Donald Trump (2017 - 2021); helping readers get an overview of the US cultural diplomacy landscape and the basic characteristics of US cultural diplomacy expressed through historical periods, focusing on the first two decades of the 21st century. On that basis, the author draws recommendations for Vietnam in cultural diplomacy work, especially in relations with the US.
