Award Distinguished Alumnus Title to Consul General of the Republic of Korea
On March 4, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (USSH VNUHCM), warmly welcomed Mr. Shin Choong Il, Consul General of the Republic of Korea in Ho Chi Minh City, for a formal visit and exchange.
On this occasion, the University conferred upon Mr. Shin the title of Distinguished Alumnus, in recognition of his contributions to fostering educational cooperation and cultural exchange between Vietnam and South Korea.

During the meeting, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ngô Thị Phương Lan emphasized the Consul General’s support for various educational, scientific research, and student exchange programs, as well as cultural initiatives. She highlighted that, as one of the nation’s leading institutions in the social sciences and humanities, the University looks forward to expanding its collaboration with South Korea, contributing to the overall development of both countries.

In response, Consul General Shin Choong Il expressed his pride in returning to the University—a place that holds deep personal memories from his time as a student. As a diplomat, he reiterated his strong commitment to promoting educational cooperation between Vietnam and South Korea, particularly in creating opportunities for Vietnamese students to study and work in South Korea. He affirmed his ongoing role as a bridge between the two nations, especially in the realms of education and culture.

In a key highlight of the visit, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ngô Thị Phương Lan formally presented Mr. Shin with the title of Distinguished Alumnus. This marks the first time USSH VNUHCM has bestowed this title on a former student, recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions to society, the community, and international cooperation. The award not only underscores the University’s appreciation of Mr. Shin’s efforts but also affirms the vital role of education in building bridges between nations.
USSH VNUHCM has long been recognized as a vital connector in educational and cultural cooperation between Vietnam and South Korea. The University is a pioneer in Korean Studies and a hub for generations of Korean and international students. Mr. Shin was among them, having studied Vietnamese at the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies in 2009. This foundational experience gave him a deep understanding of Vietnamese culture and language, which greatly supported his diplomatic career.

As part of his visit, Mr. Shin also engaged with students in a special talk on “Vietnam–Korea Relations.” He reviewed the history of bilateral ties since their establishment in 1992, noting their steady growth across sectors—especially in trade, education, and culture. Today, South Korea stands as one of Vietnam’s top trading partners and the leading source of foreign direct investment (FDI).
He underscored the importance of education in strengthening bilateral ties and encouraged students to take advantage of opportunities to study and experience Korean culture. He also expressed hopes to expand scholarship programs, student exchanges, study-abroad initiatives, and employment pathways with Korean businesses.

With increasing numbers of Vietnamese students studying in South Korea and vice versa, Mr. Shin believes that the younger generation plays a key role in sustaining and developing the friendship between the two countries. He encouraged students to embrace these opportunities and pledged continued support for future educational programs and cultural exchanges.
He also engaged in a lively Q&A session, addressing students’ questions about scholarships, job opportunities in Korean enterprises, and career prospects in today’s globalized environment—especially as more Korean companies invest and expand in Vietnam.
