Seminar “Job opportunities for International Relations students”: Experience and opportunities

On the morning of April 19, the Faculty of International Relations, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City organized a seminar with the theme "Job opportunities for International Relations students" at the Dinh Tien Hoang campus. The event is part of a career orientation series, focusing on providing information and analyzing career prospects in the field of International Relations, as well as the skills students need to acquire before entering the labor market.

The seminar was attended by Mr. Tran Xuan Thuy - Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of External Relations, Mr. Do Van Thien - Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Ho Chi Minh City Law Newspaper, and Ms. Le Thi Quoc Khanh - Human Resources Consulting Manager, Persolkelly Vietnam Co., Ltd., along with guest speakers who are lecturers and alumni of the Faculty of International Relations.

Opening the seminar, MSc. Nguyen Van Phai - Deputy Director of the Faculty of International Relations affirmed the continuous improvement in the training quality of the Faculty as students have more opportunities to work and hold important positions at reputable diplomatic agencies and economic organizations across the country. He shared: “The sharings from the alumni generation will help you better visualize your career path, the skills you need to equip, and the challenges you must face to seize potential opportunities.”

Sharing about the labor market requirements for International Relations students, speaker Tran Xuan Thuy emphasized: “The career development journey requires you to strengthen professional knowledge, develop practical skills, improve foreign language proficiency, build a professional network, and especially cultivate flexible thinking and sensitivity to international issues.” Continuous self-improvement is the key factor that he believes will help students become important contributors to the process of deep international integration of Vietnam in the “Rise-up era of the nation.”

Work experience in a professional journalism environment - a relatively new field for International Relations students was also mentioned by speaker Do Van Thien: “The major focuses on political theory, diplomacy, and international research, which helps students create quality and profound journalistic content on global issues, but it is also a limitation when you are not professionally trained in skills such as news writing, editing, multi-platform content production, etc.” According to him, the self-learning process plays a key role in supplementing these skills, thereby expanding students' experience in the working system in general and the journalism field in particular.

Noting what needs to be prepared before entering the labor market, speaker Le Thi Quoc Khanh emphasized the role of cultivating a second language and regularly practicing physical training to increase pressure resistance and meet diverse job requirements. The statement “The door to the labor market is always open if you are ready to step in” expresses her belief in the readiness and proactiveness of students in seizing career opportunities.

After the presentations, students and faculty members had a Q&A session with the speakers and guests regarding the right skills and learning attitudes to adapt to the future working environment. Following the sharings on how to improve learning efficiency and choose a suitable career, alumni also emphasized the role of perseverance and a progressive spirit in the journey of building a personal brand and positioning themselves.
