International Scientific Conference Commemorating Vietnam’s 80th Independence Day


On August 15, 2025, the international scientific conference themed “From 1945 August Revolution to a New Era of Development: Vietnam’s Achievements, Potential, International Standing, and Reputation” was jointly organized by VNU-USSH and USSH, VNU-HCM at VNU-USSH in celebration of the 80th Independence Day.
The conference brought together nearly 200 scholars from Vietnam and abroad, alongside experts, lecturers, and students. Its aim was to create a forum to reaffirm the significance of the 1945 August Revolution, assess the nation’s achievements over the past 80 years, and propose strategic solutions for a new era.
The plenary session was chaired by Prof. Dr. Tạ Ngọc Tấn, Standing Vice Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council; Prof. Dr. Phùng Hữu Phú, Chairman of the Scientific and Training Council, USSH, VNU-Hanoi; Prof. Dr. Võ Văn Sen, Chairman of the Scientific and Training Council and former Rector of USSH, VNU-HCM; Prof. Dr. Hoàng Anh Tuấn, Rector of USSH, VNU-Hanoi; and Prof. Dr. Ngô Thị Phương Lan, Rector of USSH, VNU-HCM.
Prof. Dr. Ngô Thị Phương Lan highlighted Vietnam’s remarkable progress over 80 years, leaving behind the ashes of war to become a nation with significant development potential, deep international integration, and an increasingly affirmed international standing. She further stressed the conference’s role in reflecting on history and extracting lessons from the past in shaping future vision and development.

Prof. Dr. Nguyễn Văn Khánh praised the originality and novelty of the presented research papers, noting the use of new archival sources, interdisciplinary approaches, and comparative studies. This has offered fresh, in-depth perspectives on Vietnam’s history.

At the plenary session, delegates listened to notable presentations, including:
- “New Perspectives on the 1945 August Revolution” by Prof. Dr. Pierre Asselin (San Diego State University, USA).
- “The Southern Resistance Administrative Committee - A Creative Application of the People’s Democratic Government Model” by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Trần Thị Mai (USSH, VNU-HCM).
- “From Independence to Đổi Mới 2.0 (1954-2024): The Substantial Contribution of a Progressively Decolonized France to the Opening and Modernization of Vietnam” by Prof. Dr. Pierre Journoud (Université Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3, France).

With 150 carefully prepared research papers, the conference was organized into three thematic panels:
- The 1945 August Revolution in Vietnamese history and its international significance.
- 80 years of nation-building and development (1945-2025).
- Vietnam in the new era of development.
The conference demonstrated the strong leadership of the two USSH universities, serving as an academic forum that garnered intellect and the aspiration to contribute. It also stood as vivid evidence of the close, enduring cooperation between the two institutions, contributing to the training of high-quality human resources for the nation’s development.
