International Academic Seminar: Applying AI in Chinese Language Teaching
On December 27, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City (USSH-VNUHCM), in collaboration with Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Ho Chi Minh City, organized an international academic seminar titled “Applying AI in Chinese Language Teaching.”
Opening the seminar, Ms. Lam Tuyet Phuong, M.A., Director of the Chinese Language Center at Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages, noted that while artificial intelligence is still an emerging field, it is rapidly advancing. She emphasized that educators must keep pace with technological developments and continuously enhance their expertise to effectively utilize these tools. She expressed hope that participants would gain valuable insights and practical tools that could be applied directly in their teaching.

Representing USSH-VNUHCM, Dr. Le Hoang Dung, Vice President, highlighted the role of the Chinese language as a “bridge” for international cooperation and exchange. He noted that the integration of technology and artificial intelligence can enhance learning efficiency while also supporting instructors in their teaching. “In today’s context, language plays an especially important role, and the application of information technology, particularly artificial intelligence, in foreign language teaching and learning is essential,” he emphasized.

The program continued with a presentation by Mr. Lien Sung-Yu, M.A., Digital Instructor at the Chinese Language Center of Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages. He introduced an interactive classroom model that enables teachers to monitor student participation, pose questions, conduct quick polls, and gather feedback in real time. Through activities such as voting, Q&A sessions, and AI-powered data analysis, he emphasized the importance of creating an active learning environment that fosters continuous interaction while helping teachers better understand learners’ needs and study habits across different educational levels.

During the workshop session, Mr. Lien Sung-Yu also introduced NotebookLM, an AI tool developed by Google that functions as a “digital research assistant” specializing in processing texts and reference materials, complementing Gemini, which is known for its creative capabilities. NotebookLM allows instructors to upload materials from various sources to generate grammar maps, worksheets, practice exercises, instructional videos, review guides, and citation-based multiple-choice questions.
The tool also supports language and content-level customization, making it suitable for both primary school students and adult learners, while helping develop critical thinking skills. Because it processes only the data provided by users, NotebookLM is considered a reliable and effective solution for developing digital learning materials and innovating teaching methods in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
The seminar offered practical insights and meaningful perspectives on the application of artificial intelligence in Chinese language teaching. Through the speakers’ presentations, along with open discussions and thoughtful questions from participating faculty members, the event fostered a dynamic academic environment that encouraged knowledge sharing and opened new directions for teaching practice.
