Master's thesis defense of graduate student Tran Thi Trung Anh

On the morning of March 24, 2026, at room B204, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City, the master's thesis defense of graduate student Tran Thi Trung Anh was held with the topic: “The image of Geisha in Japanese society from post-World War II to present”, under the scientific supervision of Dr. Nguyen Thi Hoai Chau.

The thesis defense committee included: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Thi Hong Xuan - Committee Chair; Dr. Nguyen Thi Phuong Hao - Reviewer 1; Dr. Nguyen Minh Nhut - Reviewer 2; Dr. Huynh Phuong Anh - Committee Secretary; Dr. Dang Nang Hoa - Member.

The thesis consists of 127 pages, excluding the appendix and references. The research content is developed into three main chapters: Chapter 1: An overview of the Geisha image in Japanese society before World War II; Chapter 2: The transformation of the Geisha image in Japanese society from post-World War II to present; Chapter 3: Geisha and the issue of cultural preservation in the modern context.

At the defense, the thesis was assessed by the committee members as having both scientific and practical significance, demonstrating that the student carried out the topic in a serious, elaborate, and well-oriented manner. The topic is suitable for the Asian Studies major, and it also reflects the effort to approach a specific cultural symbol of Japan in relation to the social, historical, and cultural changes from post-World War II to the present.

Through focusing on the study of the Geisha image, the student contributed to clarifying the factors affecting the transformation of a traditional cultural symbol in modern Japanese society, thereby opening up further academic reflections on the issue of preserving cultural heritage in contemporary conditions. The thesis is also noted for several outstanding points such as a relatively new approach, the ability to exploit sources in Vietnamese, English, and Japanese, as well as the investment in topic selection and research content processing.
