IR EXPERIENCE DAY 2026 | A look back at the field trip and learning session at the American Center Ho Chi Minh City

On the afternoon of August 6, 2026, within the framework of the “𝐈𝐑 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔” program, students from the Faculty of History and International Relations had the opportunity to visit and engage in practical learning at the American Center Ho Chi Minh City, under the U.S. Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City.
The program was honored to welcome the presence of representatives from the U.S. Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City:
Ms. Chris Le - Chief of the Political Section;
Ms. Brett Walkley - Cultural Affairs Officer;
Mr. Michael Forberg - Peace Corps Volunteer;
Ms. Truc Nguyen - Human Resources Representative;
Ms. Nga Le - Human Resources Representative.
Representing the Faculty of History and International Relations were Dr. Tran Nguyen Khang - Head of the International Relations Department, MSc. Kieu Diep Phuong Quynh - Lecturer in International Relations, along with more than 70 students from the Faculty of History and International Relations.
Opening the program, Ms. Chris Le - Chief of the Political Section expressed her pleasure in meeting and engaging with students about the culture, history, and Vietnam-U.S. relations. Through an interactive quiz, students had the opportunity to test, consolidate, and expand their understanding of the bilateral relations between the two countries in a lively and open atmosphere. Continuing the program, she shared about the 31-year journey of Vietnam-U.S. diplomatic relations. The presentation recapped significant milestones, notably the upgrade of relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, while clarifying key areas of cooperation such as economy, education, technology, security, and defense. Additionally, drawing from her experience attending United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) sessions, accompanying high-level missions, and working in foreign affairs, Ms. Chris Le provided practical perspectives on the diplomatic profession. Through this, students gained a better understanding of the job's characteristics, necessary skills, and development opportunities in this field.
Within the program, Mr. Michael Forberg - Peace Corps Volunteer introduced students to key figures in the founding of the United States through content about the Founder Museum. The sharing helped students better understand significant historical milestones in the formation of the United States of America and the foundational values that contributed to shaping the nation's development.
One of the contents that received much attention from students was the introduction to career opportunities at the U.S. Consulate General, presented by Ms. Truc Nguyen and Ms. Nga Le - Human Resources Representatives. Through practical sharing about the work environment, recruitment requirements, and necessary skills, students gained a specific perspective on career paths in foreign affairs, thereby more clearly defining their personal development plans for the future.
Concluding the program, students were introduced to the E-library system, free learning resources, and academic databases, as well as scholarship, academic exchange, and cultural exchange programs available for Vietnamese students by officials from the American Center. Through this, students have more conditions to access international knowledge, broaden their perspectives on global issues, and effectively utilize resources for learning and research in the field of International Relations.
The Faculty of History and International Relations would like to express our gratitude to the American Center and the representatives of the U.S. Consulate General for their thoughtful welcome and valuable sharing provided to our students. The visit not only brought practical knowledge about Vietnam-U.S. relations, public diplomacy, and the work environment at diplomatic missions but also opened up many opportunities for learning, networking, and career orientation, adding motivation for students to be more confident on the journey of international integration.

The career orientation program “IR Experience Day 2026” for students of the Faculty of History and International Relations is organized by the International Relations Department and the Faculty's Student Association.
