The competences of academic staff are identified and evaluated based on two main criteria:
- Degrees: Currently, the Faculty has 1 professor, 6 associate professors, 12 doctors; the majority of masters (6/9) are attending doctoral programmes. The number of lecturers who have completed doctoral-level education accounts for a large proportion (68%). Lecturers who are under 40 and hold master’s degrees have to attend doctoral programmes after two years. Lecturers with doctoral degrees are encouraged to apply for associate professorship. Some of these doctoral-level lecturers used to study and do research abroad. All of the lecturers have good competences of foreign language and information technology. The Faculty’s lecturers have suitable fields of expertise and are assigned subjects based on their expertise.
- Quality of teaching and research: Regarding teaching, the Faculty’s lecturers are evaluated based on random surveys of students’ feedbacks on the courses of which these lecturers are in charge, and their class observations. Regarding research, every academic year, lecturers are requested to individually have at least two articles published on reputable scientific forums (science journals, conferences…).
The above criteria are clearly described in the Faculty’s job position project (with details about competences, evaluation criteria). Based on the two main criteria mentioned above, the lecturers’ quality assurance system operates on two levels - faculty level and university level according to the regulations. At the end of each academic year, the Faculty evaluates lecturers’ competences based on their individual annual performance summary (which consists of self-evaluation and evaluations by the FH’s administrative board), which serves as the basis for revision in order to enhance teaching quality. There are four levels for evaluating lecturers’ competences: Outstanding performance; Good performance; Adequate performance; and Inadequate performance. The Faculty analyses the lecturers’ performances and reports to the University. Based on the Faculty’s internal evaluations together with the evaluations by stakeholders, the Faculty submits the evaluation results to the University committee of rewards and competitions for annual nomination of excellent lecturers. Lecturers with inadequate performance for two consecutive years are supposed to have their contracts terminated by the University. Students’ satisfaction level is an important channel for evaluating the lecturers’ quality.
