Follow the idol and keep the fire seething in you
Program “Major counseling and scholarship awarding: I choose passion” was held on the morning of July 6th, 2020, at the Executive Hall (USSH, VNU-HCMC, Thu Duc campus). The program is a traditional annual meeting of the Faculty of History, between the Board of Management, faculty and students to create a bond between faculty and students; and also to answer questions about the Training Program, the Student Events as well as the scholarships for disadvantaged students who are striving to study.
In higher education, learners — students when determining their studies have had great ambitions, and what they need is the encouragement to keep that ambition in themselves, help them with their efforts and talents (the potentials that are hidden in each person) for them to achieve. Therefore, the teachers are to encourage to create excitement for learners so that they are motivated to work to achieve competencies (in terms of knowledge, skills and attitude) by their strengths and weaknesses, to prepare for future careers and meet the requirements set in human development. The process of teaching to undergraduate students is a direct and great responsibility that the teacher must take for society and the future of the community; and with that responsibility, the sharing from teachers about following their idol and keeping the fire vibrant in themselves to achieve success has created an interesting atmosphere in the Faculty of History’s “I choose passion” meeting
Following your idol
“We cannot be without idols in our life.” Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ha Minh Hong, Chairman of Science Council emphasized. Before we went to school, we also lived with the idol; that idol brought me into school. Then follow the idol. That idol is Le Anh Xuan. So it was Le Anh Xuan who brought me into this school and what was it for? To enter the faculty of history. “Le Anh Xuan studied history,” he added. When I came to school, I still followed that idol and there were other idols—new ones. When we got out of school, we got more idols. Idols are talented people that are very close to me, real people, real things that others have done successfully that we can follow. In my opinion, it's an idol. If we didn't have idols, we couldn't define the target, couldn't identify our strengths and weaknesses, and what we want to choose Every choice has its criteria and the easiest one is that no idols, no criteria. This is my way of thinking. And I stayed at school probably because of that place. I also advise you, first of all, choose for yourself the idol ‘closest’ to you, and I strive to follow the talent of that person, which is to cultivate your personal experiences.
ASSOC.PROF.DR. Ha Minh Hong also shared the purpose of “following his idol”, according to which: I learned to be myself, but there were examples alongside me. There are your experiences, idols that we can follow. I say the idol to follow, not to sacrifice for To ‘die’ for that idol is blind. But we need idols to have tangible targets (real people, real things) such as their talents, and good characteristics to follow. That's what an idol is, in my opinion So it's essential to have an idol to provide us a standard to thrive and improve, to be a certain person, achieve something
Sharing about idol, Prof. Dr. Vo Van Sen, Head of Vietnamese History Department, stressed that “not to idolize too many people because idols are prone to collapse and as such we ourselves can fall along”. He shared: “Everyone is human. There are good aspects to learn, but each person has some advantages and also disadvantages, then we should selectively learn their pros, and leave the cons”. He emphasized learning in people and “Life is my teacher. Everyone is a teacher.”
Keep the fire simmering in you
Sharing his experience on achieving success, Prof. Dr. Vo Van Sen has led to the image of “vibrant fire” that needs to be kept in each person. I believe that the successful person is the one who tries to be passionate about his research; at the same time, “he/she must firmly believe in the good of life, do not stumble.” We have to study with all our passion. Passion without despondency I have a motto “Despondency is suicide.” If you don't want to kill yourself, you shouldn't be despondent. Please keep that in mind Difficulties bring us more lessons, and the more lessons we learn, the more we grow up. Once you have identified your passions, give it all. Let's set a fire. Keep that fire simmering in you Don't let it go off. Life is so diverse. If you're passionate and you don't get despondent, you always try, you are sure to succeed.
In order to “keep the fire simmering”, many teachers also share the tips of studying for each major to succeed.
Dr. Do Thi Hanh, Head of World History Department, emphasized the importance of foreign languages for learners. Foreign languages are essential and self-study is primary for students. In terms of foreign language requirements in any industry, students must comply with the standards of the University, for the subjects of History, there are additional specialized English classes When we study and learn the history of the world, most of the information comes from abroad, and mainly in English. If we didn't have that tool, we wouldn't be able to call ourselves good learning or understand a deep knowledge of world history. Therefore, students must be very aware that if they continue to study world history, they must equip themselves with at least one fluent foreign language, mainly English, to be able to read and process documents well. Equipped yourself with English, in my opinion, is a must.
ASSOC.PROF.DR. Duong Kieu Linh, lecturer in History of the Vietnamese Communist Party shared about students' efforts to become Party members. Firstly, it's very good when a student striving to enter the Party, but it is not compulsory that if you study the Party History department, you have to try to become a Party member Secondly, if you do that (strive to become a Party member), it is a very welcoming thing. Thirdly, when you graduate, if you choose to enter state institutions, then first, it is recommended that you try to enter the Communist Party of Vietnam
ASSOC.PROF.DR. Dang Van Thang, lecturer in the Department of Archaeology shared about the major: Maybe we don't go out of school to do archaeology, but slowly, in the future we study masters and doctoral, we will be able to do archaeology.
It can be said that because in the educational environment, the teacher teaches, guides and inspires students, the learner has a certain influence from his teacher/mentor. Therefore, the teacher has a certain role to influence how the learner becomes. This does not negate that the learner's activity plays a decisive role in how they will become, but it only emphasizes the fact that the learner is very affected by the teacher. The bigger the teacher is, the stronger their influence is Like Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ha Minh Hong said, “We expect you to follow the predecessors and what advice that suits you best, choose as a test; test at night; test tomorrow and test later” And most of all, as the wishes of Dr. Luu Van Quyet — Dean of the Faculty of History to all the students of the common Faculty of History: “I wish them to achieve as well as choose their direction, and by that, they can be truly passionate about it, and when they are already passionate about it, I am sure that they will succeed.”
