The Bachelor of Arts in History Programme inherits the long tradition of basic science training for social sciences in Vietnam (especially after 1975 in the model of the University of Ho Chi Minh City). On transformation to the credit-based system (since the 1990s of the 20th century), there have been many changes and the curricula have been distributed into credits and gradually reduced from 210 credits (in 2000) to 180 credits (in 2012), to 160 credits (in 2014) and 140 credits (in 2017), and now 120 credits (2019).
The goals of the BAHP have adjusted to match with changes in the programme framework and the national development. However, it is basically to provide BA employees who not only have basic knowledge of social sciences, background knowledge of historical sciences, and career orientation, but own an independent and creative thinking competence, strong political qualities, professional practice skills and a full awareness of serving the country as well.
The training goals in the BAHP are concretised into 4 PLOs, including: (1) Knowledge and argumentation of the discipline; (2) Personal and professional skills and qualities; (3) Teamwork and communication skills; (4) Expertise competence. They are to meet learners’ expected objectives and help them be able to continue learning at the graduate level for a Master’s or PhD degree in History.
The BAHP is structured into a complete knowledge system consisting of general education knowledge and specialised knowledge (basic knowledge of the social sciences and humanities sector; foundational discipline knowledge; in-depth discipline and specialised knowledge; internship). The programme is interrelated with other disciplines at the USSH and interconnected with those close to the History Science. Each module/course in the BAHP has a general syllabus and detailed one showing its objectives and PLOs.
The process of implementing the BAHP is a process of teaching and learning under the USSH’s Philosophy: Traditional - Liberal - Creative Education with teaching activities in underlying sciences and historical sciences; basic research orientation on the historical sciences; training pedagogical skills, research skills and creative skills for professional practice; and promotion of the FH’s traditional strengths. The FH has conducted teaching activities, scientific researches and regularly updated new research results that are closely related to practice and adaptability to the society. For the honour BA program in History (in 2005), the FH has built complete groups of modules dedicated to training students who are capable of self-study and creative thinking in learning, research and occupational practice.
The BAHP includes specializations: History of Vietnam, History of the World, History of the Vietnamese Communist Party, and Archaeology in which the specialization of History of Vietnam is the spearhead in education and research at the FH and the USSH as well. This programme is well implemented thanks to the support of both the FH and USSH, and directly by the FH lecturers and staff, and by the coordination of the functional divisions. The FH’s achievements are to provide the society with bachelors capable of teaching and research, adapting to society in the period of development and integration.
