The Department of Archaeology attended “The 55th Conference to announce new findings on archaeology” in Hai Phong

From 28th to 30th September 2020, the “55th Meeting of Notice of New Archaeological Findings” took place in Hai Phong with the participation of many researchers related to archaeology, including lecturers from the Department of Archaeology (Faculty of History, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU-HCM).

Lecturers from the Department of Archaeology attending the “55th Meeting of Notice of New Findings on Archaeology” include: Dr. Phi Ngoc Tuyen (Head of Department), Assoc.Prof.Dr. Dang Van Thang, Dr. Nguyen Thi Hau and Mr. Nguyen Thang Thang. This year, the conference's organizers organized a shuttle for attendants to visit Cao Quy Pile Yard (Lien Khe Commune, Thuy Nguyen District), and Bach Dang Giang Historic Area (Minh Duc Town, Thuy Nguyen District).

At the City Convention Center (18 Hoang Dieu Street, Minh Khai Ward, Hong Bang District), there were opening activities, joint report sessions and discussions at sub-committees, summary and concluding activities. According to the report “Archaeological Activities in Vietnam in 2019 — 2020”, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Bui Van Liem (Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Archaeology) said: The Organizing Committee has received 341 essays related to the following areas: Prehistoric Archaeology (105 articles), Historical Archaeology (166 articles), Champa - Oc Eo Archaeology (48 articles), Underwater Archaeology (16 articles) and 6 articles on the general activities of archaeological research agencies. These papers were divided into 4 sub-committees for the participants to present and discuss, including: Prehistoric Archaeology Subcommittee, Historical Archaeology Subcommittee, Champa-Oc Eo Archaeology Subcommittee and Underwater Archaeology Subcommittee.

Department of Archaeology (Faculty of History, USSH, VNU-HCM) also has submitted articles to the Conference on the activities of the Department from September 2019 to September 2020 by faculty members of the Department: Assoc.Prof.Dr. Pham Duc Manh, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Dang Van Thang, Dr. Nguyen Thi Hau, MA.Nguyen Thi Ha, MA.Vo Thi Anh Tuyet, MA.Nguyen Chien Thang.

Also at the conference, the Institute of Archaeology (Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences) edited and published the papers at the conference in 2019, titled “New Findings on Archaeology in 2019” released by the Publishing House of Social Sciences (No. ISBN: 978-604-308-096-4, 19x27 cm, printed and deposited in September 2020) In this publication, there are many reports on the fields of environmental and ancient humans, archaeological examination and excavation and research on relics authored by lecturers in the Department of Archaeology (Faculty of History, USSH, VNU-HCM), include: Assoc.Prof.Dr. Dang Van Thang, MA. Nguyen Thi Ha, MA. Do Ngoc Chien, and MA. Nguyen Chien Thang.

In the Program of the “55th Annual Conference of Notice of New Findings on Archaeology” in 2020, the Organizing Committee also displayed research publications of scientists published in 2019-2020. Especially, there are works from scientists from the Department of Archaeology, include: Assoc.Prof.Dr. Pham Duc Manh and Assoc.Prof.Dr, Dang Van Thang

The book “Approaching to the cultural history of Bien Hung — Dong Nai” by Assoc.Prof.Dr. Pham Duc Manh was published by Dong Nai Publishing House in the second quarter of 2019.

The book “The Archaeological Sites of the Oc Eo— Post Oc Eo Culture Tradition at An Giang Province ” by Assoc.Prof.Dr. Pham Duc Manh (Editor) was published by The National University of Ho Chi Minh City Publishing House, released in the fourth quarter of 2019.

The book “Ancient Tomb in Southern Area (Nam Bo)” by Assoc.Prof.Dr. Pham Duc Manh by Tong Hop Publishing House of Ho Chi Minh City issued in the first quarter of 2020.

The book “The Lithophones at Loc Hoa” by Assoc.Prof.Dr. Pham Duc Manh — author, and Ho Tien Duat (Director of Binh Phuoc Museum) — co-author, published by Tong Hop Publishing House of Ho Chi Minh City. in the first quarter of 2020.

The book “Ancient Tomb at Dong Nai”, by Assoc.Prof.Dr. Pham Duc Manh - author, and Dr. Nguyen Hong An (Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Dong Nai province) - co-author, published by Dong Nai Publishing House in the third quarter of 2020.

Assoc.Prof.Dr. Dang Van Thang with two publications published and exhibited at the conference including:

Cat Tien Archaeological Relics identified and promoted value” by Assoc.Prof.Dr. Dang Van Thang — Editor, published by the National University of Ho Chi Minh City Publishing House in October 2019.

Na Phat Na the First and Last Capital of the Kingdom of Phu Nam” by Assoc.Prof.Dr. Dang Van Thang-editor, Mr. Nguyen Huu Gieng — co-editor, Ms. Ha Thi Suong-co-editor, published by the National University of Ho Chi Minh City Publishing House in May 2020.

The reports and research publications of lecturers in the Department of Archaeology (Faculty of History, USSH, VNU-HCM) together with research agencies in the country presented at the conference not only made an “exciting, effective field season 2019 - 2020 all across the country” of Vietnamese archaeology community, but also provided “new scientific information supplementing real materials to help scientists delve into the basics of Vietnamese Archaeology, contributing to better awareness of the history of Vietnamese ethnic formation and the history of the formation of the Vietnamese people and human development of Vietnam” as the report on “Archaeological Activities of Vietnam in 2019 — 2020” by Assoc.Prof.Dr. Bui Van Liem (Institute of Archaeology) at the Conference.
