On October 2nd, the Embassy of Vietnam, in collaboration with Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), organized the Vietnamese Language and Culture Day in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei Darussalam. The event attracted a large number of UBD lecturers and students, friends, and citizens of Brunei, along with representatives of the Vietnamese community in Brunei. In his opening remarks, Ambassador of Vietnam to Brunei Tran Anh Vu shared that education, culture, tourism, and people-to-people exchange are priorities in the Action Program for the implementation of the Vietnam-Brunei Comprehensive Partnership for the 2023-2027 period, and are also areas that attract the interest and active participation of the youth and students of both countries. Notably, educational cooperation between the two countries has seen substantive development with the effective implementation of the Vietnamese language teaching program at UBD and other collaborative activities in training, as well as lecturer and student exchanges. The Ambassador expressed his hope that Brunei students learning Vietnamese would serve as a bridge to spread Vietnamese culture and language to the people of Brunei, contributing to further promoting the cooperative and friendly relations between the two countries. Dr. Juliana and the UBD leadership expressed their appreciation and desire to further strengthen cooperative activities, student and lecturer exchanges, as well as joint training and research cooperation with Vietnamese universities. The Embassy screened a video and introduced the UNESCO Heritage of Hoi An Ancient Town and the Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Mid-Autumn Festival in Hoi An, and hosted a Mid-Autumn exhibition featuring traditional cultural items. On this occasion, the Embassy gave Mid-Autumn gifts to children of Vietnam-Brunei multicultural families. Many UBD students participated enthusiastically in Vietnamese language quizzes with questions about Vietnamese culture and cultural/tourism exchanges between Vietnam and Brunei. Traditional games of Vietnam and Brunei were introduced at the event, such as chess, O an quan (mandarin square capturing), etc., attracting a large number of students and friends from Brunei. Dr. Tran Trong Nghia, a lecturer at the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City, expressed his wish that the Embassy of Vietnam in Brunei and UBD would organize more practical activities to promote and support Vietnamese language teaching, such as creating a Vietnamese Culture Corner, sponsoring scholarships for international students learning Vietnamese to visit Vietnam for practical experiences, or participating in short-term courses to experience Vietnamese culture and language, etc. Established in 1985, UBD is the leading university in Brunei and ranks 385th in the QS World University Rankings 2025. The university is honored to have the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, serving as its Chancellor.
