CAFSUS Project – Participation in the 2025 Buôn Ma Thuột Coffee Festival Activities
As part of the 2025 Buôn Ma Thuột Coffee Festival, the Center for Marine and Climate Change Research under the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM), delegated representatives to participate in the International Trade Promotion Conference under the theme "Connecting and Elevating Vietnamese Coffee."

The event served not only as a platform to promote the Vietnamese coffee brand but also as a vital forum for discussing the impacts of climate change on the coffee sector and exploring sustainable adaptation strategies.
Coffee is one of Vietnam’s key export commodities, contributing significantly to the national economy and the livelihoods of millions of farmers. However, climate change poses serious challenges—rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, and extreme weather events are directly affecting coffee yield and quality. Therefore, research and the development of mitigation and adaptation strategies throughout the coffee value chain have become more urgent than ever.
The conference acted as an important gathering point for producers, exporters, scientists, and international organizations engaged in the coffee sector. Beyond promoting trade cooperation, the event also facilitated the exchange of experiences, presentation of research findings, and the joint pursuit of solutions to enhance the Vietnamese coffee value chain in the face of escalating climate change.

Presentations at the conference analyzed global coffee market dynamics, consumption trends, and the challenges and opportunities confronting the Vietnamese coffee industry. Particularly noteworthy was the discussion on international production standards and newly introduced market requirements, such as the European Union's EUDR (EU Deforestation Regulation), which demands that Vietnam’s coffee sector adapt in order to retain its competitive export position.
Furthermore, the conference addressed the development of large-scale, sustainable coffee production areas and the integration of science and technology in cultivation and processing to improve product quality and added value. Prominent companies such as Trung Nguyên, An Thái, and the Western Highlands Agro-Forestry Scientific and Technical Institute introduced sustainable export models and circular economy approaches involving coffee production, thereby fostering a green and modern development trajectory for the sector.
Participation in this event aligns with the Center’s mission to conduct research and advocate for climate change adaptation policies, particularly in key agricultural sectors such as coffee. Through this conference, the Center for Marine and Climate Change Research aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration among scientists, enterprises, and policymakers to advance a resilient, environmentally responsible, and internationally competitive Vietnamese coffee industry.

This event also provided members of the CAFSUS project with opportunities to collect empirical data, validate research hypotheses, and expand networks with businesses and international organizations. The information gathered will inform scientific reports, policy recommendations, and innovative solutions aimed at developing a climate-resilient and deforestation-free coffee value chain in Vietnam.
