At the 17th Council of Presidents' Meeting of the Southeast Asian Teacher Education Network (AsTEN), hosted by the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, in Singapore from May 26–28, 2024, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ngo Thi Phuong Lan was officially appointed as the new President of AsTEN for the upcoming term.

The university delegation attending the conference included Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ngo Thi Phuong Lan – President, Dr. Le Hoang Dung – Vice President, Dr. Hoang Mai Khanh – Head of the Quality Assurance Office, and Dr. Cao Thi Chau Thuy – Head of the Academic Affairs Office.

The conference focused on key issues and collaborative activities in training, research, internationalization, and community engagement to implement five strategic development goals for the new phase until 2030. The conference approved the Cooperative Research Plan for the 2024–2028 period, emphasizing four main research directions for impactful and sustainable development: learner-centered approaches and innovative teaching and learning methods, enhancing teacher training quality, developing teacher competencies, and education for sustainable development. This plan promotes collaboration in research and publication among faculty and students from member institutions. The conference also recognized the progress of collaborative research projects funded by Kasetsart University, Thailand, in which faculty members from the university participated in two projects.

Notably, the conference included the ceremonial handover of the AsTEN presidency to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ngo Thi Phuong Lan, President of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (USSH), Vietnam National University-Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM). This is a great honor and a significant responsibility for the university to contribute to the Southeast Asian education community. This special task carries profound meaning for us, reflecting the university’s core values of Leadership, Innovation, and Responsibility.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ngô Thị Phương Lan’s Inaugural Speech

During her three-year tenure as AsTEN President, guided by the philosophy of holistic, liberal, and multicultural education, USSH, VNU-HCM, will continue to promote and lead collaborative activities in training, research, and community service. The focus will be on addressing issues and challenges related to curricula, teaching and learning, and policies in general education and higher education, particularly in the field of teacher education.

The university will host the 18th Presidents' Meeting and the 6th AsTEN International Conference from December 12–14, 2024, to mark the 10th anniversary of the association.
