Discussions on improving the quality of population for a prosperous country, happy families and sustainable development
December 26th has been officially recognized as Vietnam's population day since 1997 and the theme of the population year 2024 has been determined by the National Steering Committee for Population and Development as “Improving population quality for a prosperous country and happy families”. Grasping this motto in time as well as to celebrate the 26th Anniversary of the Faculty's founding , on the morning of December 26, 2024, in rooms D.201 and D.202, Dinh Tien Hoang campus , the Faculty of Sociology (FOS), University of Social Sciences and Humanities (USSH, VNU-HCM) successfully organized a National Conference with the theme “Population Quality and Sustainable Development” (COPQSD) attracting more than 100 scientists, experts, and policy managers to participate.

In his Welcome speech at the COPQSD, Dr. Le Hoang Dung – Vice President of the USSH, VNU-HCM said that the role of social sciences is becoming increasingly clear in the field of population quality development - a field facing many challenges in terms of climate and environment. Therefore, organizing a conference on Population Quality in the current context is meaningful in terms of theory and practice.

Through the Opening speech, Dr. Nguyen Nu Nguyet Anh - Dean of FOS said that Vietnam is facing the challenge of population aging, rapid population aging and the risk of transitioning to an aged population structure by 2036. These arguments are supported by statistical data proving that Vietnam is among the countries with the fastest aging rate when it only has about 20 years to transition from an aging population to an aged population (2016-2036). This leads to challenges in the preparation process before transitioning to an aged population. The awareness of the risk of "aging before getting rich" has been mentioned by scholars and researchers and has received deep attention from the Party, Government and State. Therefore, improving population quality is an important strategy, not only improving labor productivity and social accumulation but also aiming at sustainable development, building a happy society for all ages. Population is both the goal and the driving force of development, closely linked to changes in the quantity and quality of human resources - a key factor for socio-economic growth.

The workshop is considered a place for researchers and lecturers to announce the research results of topics and projects on population quality associated with sustainable development, especially in the context of population aging today. The workshop was chaired by Associate Professor, Dr. Le Thanh Sang - Former Director of the Southern Institute of Social Sciences and Dr. Nguyen Nu Nguyet Anh.

Based on the articles approved by the Conference Organizing Committee and extensive discussions , the Conference suggested and oriented a number of important topics for scholars and researchers to discuss together such as:
• Concepts, models, theories on population quality, population aging and sustainable development;
• Current status of population quality and human resources;
• Factors affecting population quality;
• And other related issues.
At the workshop, there were 05 presentations with diverse topics such as the current situation of population aging in Ho Chi Minh City and some solutions and lessons learned from countries in the region; Gender imbalance at birth; Perceptions and concepts about childbirth; Education reimbursement rate and gender differences in wages; Two-way support relationships in families with elderly people. The reporters are experts with extensive experience in the field of population and development , especially 03 authors are currently working in the field who is a lecturer, graduate student and student of the FOS, USSH, VNU-HCM.

Through the conference, the FOS, USSH, VNU-HCM also introduced the published proceedings. This is a seriously and elaborately edited work with contributions from 18 domestic authors/author groups from the USSH, VNU-HCM, Institute of Labor Science and Social Affairs, Ton Duc Thang University, Van Hien University, Dalat University, Saigon University, Trade Union University, Ho Chi Minh City Academy of Officials, Institute of Sociology - Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences...
Based on the content of the papers, the proceedings divided the articles into two main topics, including: (1) Some issues on population, population aging and sustainable development; (2) Quality of human resources and issues on labor - employment in Vietnam today.
