On Sunday, April 27, 2025, from 6:30 PM to 8:45 PM, the Department of Sociology will host an online seminar titled “Cinema Through the Sociological Lens”, offering a critical exploration of social stratification as portrayed in the iconic film Titanic.
Cinema as a Mirror of Society
While Titanic is often remembered as a tragic love story, it also presents a powerful depiction of social divisions—between wealth and poverty, power and vulnerability, elites and commoners. The doomed voyage serves as a microcosm of society, revealing invisible boundaries and entrenched hierarchies.
This seminar aims to equip students with the tools to analyze films not merely as entertainment, but as sociological texts. Using Titanic as a case study, participants will examine how class distinctions, inequality, and social order are subtly conveyed through cinematic elements.
