“Go Global USSH #2: HERITAGE LESSONS - ASTEN CONNECTIONS”
An International Learning Journey of HCMUSSH Students
From August 19 to 22, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU-HCM, took part in an enriching academic and cultural exchange in Malaysia. The program was themed “Indigenous Influence on the Cultural Industry in Malaysia” and marked by a visit to Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) – a member of the ASEAN Teacher Education Network (AsTEN), chaired in 2024-2027 by Prof. Dr. Ngo Thi Phuong Lan, President of HCMUSSH.
Throughout the program, students are encouraged to advance their academic understanding and enhance interpersonal skills through a wide range of activities:
- Specialised training sections: Students learned how to develop research ideas, process data, and write academic papers under the guidance of Dr. Bui Viet Thanh, Head of the Subject Area of Vietnamese and World Cultures, Faculty of Cultural Studies;
- Cultural field trips: Students explored Malaysia’s heritage-rich destinations such as the ancient city of Malacca, Jonker Walk’s religious quarter, the National Monument, and the Petronas Twin Towers;
- Academic and cultural exchange with UPSI students: Participants attended a sharing session on Malaysia’s culture and characteristics delivered by lecturers from UPSI’s Faculty of Human Sciences. Students from both countries also created handicrafts, decorated conical hats, danced to traditional Malaysian music, and joined voices in the song “Vietnam Oi (Dear Vietnam).”
In September 2025, all these students, as divided in three groups, will present their insights and findings from the journey to receive official certificates for the program.
Wrapping up the journey, USSH students returned home with valuable insights, new friendships, and—most importantly—an open mindset for continuous learning and personal growth in diverse environments.
